A Little About Our Past
Prior to The Riptide, there were many names for Vashon Island High School’s newspaper. When the school was first established in the early 1900s, the school newspaper was called The Hijinx. This paper continued for almost 50 years, but in 1972, it was renamed The Clam. The Clam lasted shorter than The Hijinx—about 41 years—and after that, The Riptide was born. Through all variations of VHS’s school newspaper, it has been consistent in producing stories on the Vashon community, making it a strong representation of students and staff alike.
What's Happening Now
The Riptide is a student-led newspaper that represents the Vashon Island High School students and staff. The Riptide has been around since the original VHS building, and has covered various topics including upcoming events, student opinions, and community updates. With only a couple news outlets on Vashon Island, The Riptide reporters provide student voice within the Vashon community and beyond.
