Football is a sport for people who are very competitive; some people are the heroes, villains, and a narrative unfolds with every possession. The Vashon island football team is one of the VHS Fall sports. The team practices everyday after school, and there's around three home games throughout the season. Everyone makes sure to bring their Vashon Island High School spirit! Football games are the most popular events, and everyone tries their best to make an appearance.
There's a lot of reasons why students like playing football for VHS. And they enjoy learning new things everyday from practice.
“The best part of being a player of the Vashon football team is when we train to improve our skills as players, and when we train the plays that are used in the games”, senior Henry Sotz Suhul expressed.
The team goes against teams mostly in Tacoma, but sometimes they get to go against a team that is farther away.
“My favorite team that I have gone up against is the Ilwaco Fisherman because they are a strong team that pushes me to be the best athlete I could be,” senior Ling Ling Endelin said.
Students like to share their favorite positions.
“My favorite position in football is wide receiver, mainly receiver Z. I get the choice to run the ball down the field or catch an amazing pass from our QB Memphis Cress,” Junior Christopher Guerrero-Rivas said.
Students go to football games to express their love of fall sports and school spirit.
“I love socializing with my friends and having fun,” Sophomore Bella Andreu said.
“Hanging out with my friends ¨Ada Umbach¨ Senior Dempsey Moog stated
Students love the way everyone gets to know each other more throughout these games.
“I like the spirit and community bonding,” Sophomore Ellie Wolcott said
Students also love the fact they can show true support for our school.
“My favorite part about the school's football games is the community and the spirit! It also brings so many different people together to support the school,” junior Rosemary Bauman said
The football games are awesome, but VHS would not have such an amazing team without the wonderful coaches.
¨Coaching is being a positive role model for the kids, and helping them grow up as human beings,¨ football coach Richard Rivas stated.
The school is very lucky to be able to have great coaches and a great team. After all these years people still make sure to be able to go to such a memorable school event
¨Although the chances of us winning are super slim, the entire student section still cheers on our team when they're somewhat close to scoring a point,¨ Julietta Polo Bunch said.
Students love to come and support the football team, communicate with people they've maybe never even talked to but wanted to, and not to forget the awesome cheerleading team! The cheerleaders make sure they go to every football game to support their wonderful team!
