VHS club diversity this past year has grown enormously and the chances of students finding something that they are really interested in has become higher than it has been in past years. Any interest students have there is most likely a club that they can join to learn more about the thing that interests them.
The Outdoor Adventure club is led by Ms. Vanslow, and Ms Coe, but it is student led by sophomore students Piper Frith and Naomi Jones. Frith and Jones help set up and lead the adventures that the club goes on, along with other executive board member students.
“I am so proud of the Outdoor Adventure Club leadership! Students have really made this club what it is and are so organized and enthusiastic,” said Ms.Vanselow. Ms.Vanselow spoke on the leadership roles that students have taken to make this club the way it is today.
Students have really made this club what it is and are so organized and enthusiastic!! I am also proud of everyone's willingness to jump in and try new things!” said Ms. Vanselow
This year, the outdoor club has already finished their first adventure by going on a beautiful hike to Twin Falls, which is a really nice hike to an amazing waterfall. Last year, they went on many different adventures like ice skating, snowshoeing, and even their end of the year camping trip. The club was just starting, so there weren’t as many people involved. Now, the club is booming with people talking about how excited they are to take their next adventure and interest in this club only keeps on increasing.
“I have been surprised by the interest, but I really shouldn't be. So many students enjoy the outdoors,” stated Ms.Vanselow.
Another club that has grown a lot in the last year is the Future Business Leaders Of America. This is a club for future business entrepreneurs and people interested in marketing and many other things related to business. This club is student led by sophomore student, Olive Alpen, who started it last year. Ms.Coe and Sara Easterly are the club’s advisors.
“There are over 70 competition events, and that's everything ranging from sales presentations, there's entrepreneurship, there's a lot of different categories you could say,” sophomore Olive Alpen stated.
The club is a good way for people interested in business related jobs to go and learn about what they are hoping to do as a career.
“You get to meet lots of great people, make business connections and gain a lot of skills in all sorts of business fields.” sophomore Alpen said.
It could also look good on college applications if you want to study business in college or later on in life. This club is all about getting these experiences early on in life.
Science Olympiad is a new club that was introduced this year. Students in the Science Olympiad club are interested in learning more about science and being able to compete against other schools and encourage students to share their love of science on a competitive level. It will allow people to compete and have those experiences early in life and that's very important. Having those kinds of experiences so early in life is really helpful for the rest of your life. People might want to be a scientist when they're older, those competitions will help get people ready for what they want to do with the rest of their life.
Founders Club is a club that was started by Eloise Lawrence, a class of 2025 graduate. She began this club last year in her senior year and has now passed the leadership role to Miriam Casad, who is a junior. This club encourages the religious students of VHS to grow their connection to other students in school so they can speak more about their beliefs.
“Found club is a safe space to read the Word of God in a welcoming environment.” junior Miriam Casad stated.
They can converse about God together in a judgement-free environment where they share their beliefs with each other. Although this club has just started, they have already seen some achievements occurring like the growth in attendance compared to last year.
“One of the things I’m most proud of is how much Found Club has grown since last year. When Found started last year, we had only a few people at each meeting, and they were mostly seniors. This year we have a pretty consistent group of students from all grades, both girls and guys, who come each week excited to learn and grow in faith together,” stated junior Miriam Casad.
The growth of this club has been amazing to see, but the amount of members there is now is not something that they truly expected especially after the founding members graduated but the outcome has been a pleasant surprise, change is something that is bound to happen and there is good change that the club leaders want to see happen.
“Mainly I want to keep the club growing in a welcoming and faith-centered way. In the future, I want to connect more with the community and some of the churches on Vashon to do projects outside of the 30 minutes a week we get together. I’ve already reached out to a couple of the churches on the island who graciously donated Bibles to our group,” said junior Casad.
While we have already had a wide variety of clubs in the past, the additions of these clubs have been able to encourage students to try something new or even get more involved in things that they like and understand more. These clubs are all great opportunities because they give people the opportunity to go to competitions and get great experiences that are not offered within school. These clubs look great on college applications and not only that but also meeting new people can help open many opportunities for your future.
