Resolutions change every year, depending on if you completed it or not. Students at Vashon Island High School have a wide range of things they would like to accomplish in the new year. A common desire is to improve grades and work habits!
“I think that I have a lot of potential to have good grades, I just need to put the time and work into it,” Freshman Julietta Polo Bunch said.
New years is seen as a time to change across the globe, it opens up more opportunities and gives people more confidence to begin new things, and maybe close old doors. It's also a time to reflect on yourself and the things you have achieved or done in the past year.
“I plan to put in some volunteer hours and do different community service programs,” Freshman Naomi Jones said.
In Jones’ new year’s resolutions, she talks about putting in volunteer hours and helping out the community. Community work is appreciated wherever you live, on island or as a commuter. Places like parks, senior centers, and local businesses could use the help. At Vashon Island High School there is a requirement of 25 community service hours completed by the end of your senior year. Although doing community service or volunteering doesn't sound too fun at first, it's easy to find an activity that you can enjoy while helping others
“I want a Subaru Crosstrek so I can drive around and go camping with my friends,” Junior Elena Miza mentioned.
If you're of age to start driving, get that license or start drivers ed! Being able to drive creates opportunity. Although affording and buying a car is a big challenge for most teens, there is always a way. If you're turning 15 in 2025, maybe investing in car related things can be in your resolution!
“I wanna keep my grades up while performing well in my sport,” Freshman Ellie Wolcott said.
For many students, their sport is one of their top priorities; but it's visible that it should be a goal to try to maintain your grades while juggling your sport. It is important to have goals, but if they require lots of physical and mental work, then you should remember that sometimes you need a break.
“My resolution is to quit online sports betting, but I don’t know if i'm going to complete it because the women’s tennis championships is coming up and I think i'm going to lose all of my money,” freshman Leif McBennett says. Speaking of extreme sports…
“I wanna do a lot of skiing because we have season tickets to White Pass,” Freshman Bridget Simmons said.
Skiing, and snow sports in general, during the winter are very popular activities amongst Vashoners. All of the snow in the mountains and winter break, gives students a perfect time to do the thing that they love.
As the year comes to an end, people begin to think of their goals for the new year, but some like to make their decisions when the time comes, making baby steps when faced with a decision.
