Everyone is buzzing after the release of Ryan Gosling’s new movie, Project Hail Mary, and after seeing it for myself, I understand why. While the background and cinematography are incredible, the real hook is the acting. The acting by Gosling, the puppeteers, and the alien’s voice actors, all worked incredibly well together to create hilarious banter and emotional scenes that tug at the heart.
If that alone isn’t enough, instead of just any other space movie where the main character has prepared for space for years, this main character, Ryland Grace, isn’t a planned hero. He’s a nerdy school teacher who is picked up and forced into a high pressure situation. Throughout his journey in space, the rock alien, lovingly named “Rocky,” brings a comedic air, which makes the movie one that causes audiences to move from crying from laughter to crying from sadness in seconds.
In my opinion, anyone looking for their new favorite comedy should definitely go see this movie. The sassy space rock who moves like a pet, talks like a child, and doesn’t understand personal space brings a love and light to this movie that is set in an incredibly dark and scary time for Earth.
While some critics say they feel the movie is too fast paced, I believe the pacing is just right. The movie went along at a speed that was easy to follow without dwelling on anything for too long or confusing viewers with extra twists and unnecessary details. Many viewers seem to agree that this movie is a must see, and according to letterboxed.com, Project Hail Mary joined the 1 million watchers club after only being out for 9 days.
While some viewers argue that the movie wasn't accurate enough, and could have stayed truer to specific parts of the book, the majority of watchers applauded the director’s attention to detail and ability to bring the best parts of the book into the movie. One of the biggest problems that viewers had with the movie was the fact that some of the scientific dialogue was left out because of time constraints and the fact that the director chose to focus more on the emotional parts of the movie rather than the technical terms in the book. To some, this is a huge turn off from the movie because they wanted more representation for all of the scientific points in the book. Although this is a huge deal for a select group of viewers, most watchers rave about the movie and how it brings us into Grace and Rocky’s world. This is proven in the fact that it was able to quickly pass Hoppers and Scream 7 for the most watched movie so far this year, and it has continued to be popular over a month after its initial release. I think everyone should see this movie at least once because chances are it will become your new favorite.
