Now after leaving you all with quite the heinous sight of fashion crimes past, I return to show you hope for the following years of fashion to come. But what would Amali Lewis ideally see in future looks?
Let’s start off with the basics. I believe vintage clothing should come back into style, particularly clothing from the 1900-1910’s (the Edwardian era) and 1930’s. While the other more popular decades like the 50’s and 70’s do deserve their flowers, these underrated so called ‘transition’ phases in fashions should get way more recognition. The blouses from the Edwardian era are detailed but not too detailed, so you can layer them with other pieces in your closet. There's a timeless elegance that the day and evening wear of these time periods have that I feel is missing nowadays. The time and love and care put into older pieces in general shines ten times more than modern fast fashion which is often used to make a quick buck off of cheap or unpaid labor. Go to your local thrift store instead of Temu!
As for hair, the term ‘peek-a-boo’ may bring to dying the underside of your hair, but I’m referring to the peek-a-boo of the 1940’s. Popularized by Veronica Lake, an American film actress, this hairstyle is vintage Hollywood waves but with one side of the hair falling over the eye. Think Jessica Rabbit. Unfortunately due to World War II, the average woman working for the war effort could not have their hair down without it getting caught in machines, so the trend went as quickly as it came, but if all goes well and we don’t launch into the next world war before this article comes out, then I say we should run it back because it didn’t stay nearly long enough.
For specific fashion pieces, I say you can never go wrong with a classic black velvet ribbon choker, and for my DIY girlies, those hairclips and headbands with buttons on them are beautiful. Shoutout to that girl around school with buttons on her hat, you ate that down. Similar to buttons, Victorian cameos are also a neat way to add personality to your clothing, whether it be on a necklace, as earrings, or as a broach. Corsets are also a very good piece to use in layering, especially ones that aren’t the best seller on Amazon when Halloween comes around.
As for footwear, Mary Janes are classy and cute. They can virtually be worn in any era of your life, cradle to tomb, and it’s also one of the most comfortable options when it comes to women’s classy footwear. They can range from being flat to having a heel, but either option can fit in in your wardrobe.
I don’t think I’ll ever be able to show my enthusiasm enough for this, but you can never go wrong with a blue eyeshadow look. Blue eyeshadow has been a staple makeup look since humans got their hands on the stuff, and it’s been correctly labeled as iconic. Some of the most famous examples of this are Buffalo 66, The Love Witch, X, and many more films. If you’ve been on Pinterest, you probably know the exact frames of those movies I’m talking about. It also doesn’t hurt that blue works really well with brown eyes, which the majority of the population has.
I would say this has been my two cents, but we all know I don’t shut up about my opinions and pennies have stopped being produced in the USA. As always, you can take my advice or you can leave it to rot, your choice, but it’d be nice to see more unique fashion on campus (that are styled well of course).
