As of late, our school’s boys varsity soccer team has been especially successful; they are going strong, and have only experienced a single loss for the entire year thus far. They were even able to score a tie with Ballard, which is a substantially larger school. They have a number of facets and angles in their play style that allow them to keep up their status as an all-around force of nature and source of pride for VHS.

“I think we all really want to win state this year after getting knocked out of the semi-finals last year” Sophomore Jeff Nelson responded when asked about how the team stays both motivated as well as dedicated to their craft. The clear perseverance shown by the team is inspirational in its own right and makes for a clear-cut example of strong school spirit.

While motivation is certainly an essential, there are other important factors to being a good team. Coordination and communication are also paramount in a team-based sport like soccer. The members make the task of supporting one another a priority, especially on the field. Thankfully, the boys’ VHS soccer team seems to have that factor down to a science, which is another part of why they truly represent such a well-rounded team.

They have certainly demonstrated their powerful motivation as well as their excellent performance with their aforementioned near undefeated streak of games. Though they play with much skill, all good things must come to an end, and the original run of victories was no exception. The unfortunate moment that that streak came to an end was during a fateful match against Cascade Christian High School. Still, the single loss utterly pales in comparison to the number of wins they have worked hard to put in this season. The only question is if they can successfully close out the season well enough to make it to state.

Team member Brisan Hruska had this to say when asked if they thought they would still make it to state: “Oh yeah, One hundred percent. I think we’re third in the state right now.”

The future of our team seems to be in great hands. As a team they play off each other's strengths very well, they show clear as day that they are motivated, and they absolutely have earned their current position. With the season approaching a climax fairly soon and our players in near peak performance, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to predict a fruitful ending to the already promising season.
