VHS Football Team Celebrates After Ending Their Three Year Losing Streak
In the first quarter, the VHS Pirate football team and the Muckleshoot Tribal School were tied. With one touchdown, momentum started for Vashon High School Pirates winning the game. Scoring one touchdown after another, the team eventually won the game sixty-nine to 8 against Muckleshoot Tribal School.
The Vashon Pirates football team had been struggling for three years, losing every game and losing morale as they went. This year, they moved from their original team numbers of eleven man football to their new setup, eight man football. which the team reflected on how it might have helped their win against Muckleshoot.
“8 man already feels crowded and I think since we have low numbers, it definitely helps us out,” freshman Robert Cornforth said.
After the game, the team was thrilled with the win. It was their first win in three hard long years, with the staggering score they were only more thrilled that they had won a game.
“After the win, everyone was super ecstatic, and we knew that the Pirates were back… we are going to have a winning season and we can not wait to continue winning,” freshman Carter Harrington shared.
Many football players on the VHS Pirates remarked that the team and coaches should improve the football program, because they need better equipment, saying the equipment they have is tight and uncomfortable and that new equipment would help them out with practice and focus during the game.
“Higher quality drill equipment would help and if we got jerseys that wouldn't absorb so much heat during the summer practices,” Harrington explained.
Some more experienced members of the team, such as senior Micheal Browne, who has been on the team since his freshman year, observed that the freshman deserve a lot of the credit for the win and would really help with the future of the pirates team.
The win also made the VHS Pirates team much more popular. More people are showing up to the games thanks to the win, helping the base and morale of the team and fans.
“The new freshmen are absolutely good; they're so much better than I was when I was a freshman. There are so many freshmen on the team I think that the future of the team will be great,” said Browne.
The positive friendships on the team really help with the teamwork on the field. It helps the coordination and commitment to the team. The confidence boost with the win helped a lot with the win.
“The team environment is great, everything is always high energy and everyone gets along. Everyone was stoked and you felt the energy in the locker room after” Harrington and Cornforth remarked.
The victory had an astounding score of sixty-nine to eight, with most points coming from Simon Lanphear, Micheal Browne, and Jackson Mercado in the form of touchdowns, field goals, and interceptions. Harrington also remarked on how their kicker, Simon Lanphear, scored every field goal he attempted. The team's confidence was building during the game.
“The score blew me away… we got a little too confident with ourselves” Browne .
The energy and motivation of the team helped them get along and have a tight environment, further helping them with their win against Muckleshoot tribal school.
Players on the team are extremely satisfied with the coaches and their techniques. They were happy with the way that the plays were going and grateful for the win. “The coaches have years of experience in backing behind their coaching and they've taught me everything I know about football,” Brown said.
“I love my coaches. I think everyone on the team does. I'm not saying that just for the interview,” Harrington commented.
“I think the coaches are super good and are honestly so much better than the other ones not listing names but the coaches are super super nice and they help a lot” Brown commented.
The VHS pirates football team and fans had a huge boost in morale and confidence after the win, the team is in a better position to win and play. Breaking the three year losing streak really helped bring them back out on the field.
