During the 2024 presidential election, the physical and mental health of both Trump and Biden were hot topics of debate. For one, Trump is 79 and Biden is a whopping 82 years old. Then, when Trump challenged Biden to a golf match during their presidential debate, the idea stuck, and left Americans thinking… in order to find out which of the two candidates is truly the most "fit” for office, Biden and Trump must go head-to-head in a standard 18-hole game of golf.

I'll admit, this sounds like an ego contest, but nonetheless, an entertaining idea in theory. So, who would win in a golf match? Before we get into it, here are some helpful golf terms.

Helpful Golf Terms

Handicap: the average amount of strokes you hit off par

Par: the number of strokes a really good player should need on a particular hole

Stroke: the forward movement of a club with the intention to hit the ball

"Three put”: hitting the ball three times on the green before you put it in the hole

The green: the area around the hole where the grass is cut really short

Now let's break it down…

Form

“I think Trump's form is very jerky. I think Biden does have a better swing,” said golf expert, four year varsity golf captain Marshall Wade.

“Biden's putting is quite exceptional,” added avid golfer with a love of the game, Junior Josh Healey.

It is generally agreed upon that Biden is a better putter while Trump has the better swing.

“I mean, Joe Biden, you’ve seen his swing, it’s broken. He was just lying in that debate, he's not a 6 handicap," commented ammature recreational golf-pro, Owen Coley.

On the other hand, Trump won't get off easy on his weird form.

“It looks terrible, but it works,” concluded Healey.

Physical Ability

When talking about the physical ability of each candidate, there is a consensus that neither of them are doing very well.

“Neither of them can walk that far,” commented Wade.

Additionally, if either of them had to carry their own bags,

“Neither of them could do it past the first hole, and they would hire an entourage of people to carry their bags. If they're keeping it real as I like to say, they would just grab a two iron, a pitching wedge, and a putter and walk around with no bag,” says highly opinionated, non-avid golfer Jason Butler.

While many senior citizen aged folks could easily make it through a full game of golf, that is not the case of our former and current presidents. Students and teachers here at VHS are left pondering about the age of these two men.

“They're getting too old,” added Coley.

Mental Strength

Being mentally tough is an important aspect of playing golf, but there are mixed feelings when it comes to how either candidate would perform. On one hand,

“Biden seems to have a better attitude,” stated Healey.

Healey brings up a good point, but the fact of the matter is that both candidates have mental strengths and weaknesses that present themselves in different ways. Trump's overconfidence may benefit him, while Biden's good attitude may be what wins him the game.

Consistency

Consistency in golf is something that can make or break a player’s game. Many avid golfers believe that putting is the most important aspect of the game.

“You drive for show and you putt for dough. A lot of people can drive well, but if you're going to three putt on the green, then your great drive doesn't matter in the first place,” Butler said.

According to Golf Handicap Information Network, Donald Trump has a handicap of 2.8. This means that Trump has the potential to play a round of golf at 2.8 strokes over par given his best scores. Additionally, a standard 18-hole course usually has a total par of 72, and Trump's best handicap index is a 70.

According to Biden, his handicap is a 6.

Propaganda

“Trump wants to brag about his handicap, and then you know Biden's an 8, and I don't think either of them could make it past hole 9 without an ambulance transporting them around,” Butler added.

Ultimate Winner

Overall, both candidates could have a chance of winning depending on different varying circumstances. I think we can all agree that neither of them are finishing 18 holes if they have to carry their own bags, but besides this, the overall consensus is that…

“It would be the most boring, worst game of golf. A) Golf is boring anyway, watching someone else play golf, that's just 9/10 scale boring. Watching those two guys play golf would be 12 out of 10 boring and would make me want to run away and scream,” Butler commented.

“I think Trump would win by three strokes because he is more practiced,” said Wade.

With all of these factors taken into account,

“Trump, because he golfs more,” added Holloway.

“Donald Trump would absolutely destroy Joe Biden in a golf match. I mean, if you saw the video that (Trump) did with Bryson DeChambeau, you saw how good at golf he is,” Adds Coley.

In all honesty, I believe the margins are too close to confidently say who would truly win this match, but personally my bet is on John Pork. Anyways, it shouldn't be a surprise that Trump is a good golfer. He owns 16 golf properties worldwide so if he lost to Biden that would be pretty embarrassing.
