Chevron vs. Mom's

Ashley Rice

Many students know of and frequent the two main gas stations on island. The two are Chevron in town, or Mom's next to the VAC. These stations see a lot of students after school and sports who are looking for anything from snacks, and drinks, to gas. When questioned, most students have a definite preference about which gas station they prefer to visit. Their reasoning can be anything from the diversity in foods, distance from the school and gym, to the politeness of the workers.

“Mom’s has friendlier workers who are more likely to engage in a conversation with you,” junior Elena Miza Miles-Paulson said.

Lots of students echo Miza Miles-Paulson's comment about the friendliness of Mom's workers, such as junior Dempsey Moog who said, “The same guy works there and he’s really nice every time.”

Besides the friendly workers, some students appreciate the fact Mom's is closer to the school and gym which many students frequent after school.

“I would go to Mom's, because it is closer to the school and gym, which are frequent destinations for me,” said junior Bennett Caughell.

Lots of students would rather support Mom's because it is a small business and not a large chain like Chevron.

“I like Moms better because I like supporting small businesses and there is a nicer environment,” said Miza Miles-Paulson.

When looking for more diverse foods and snacks, most students said that because Chevron is such a large station, they felt it has a wider selection.

Chevron has, “a lot more frozen food and a bit more options for drinks and candy,”said senior Soren Peterson.

While some students agree with Peterson, Caughell disagrees saying, “I believe Mom's has more diversity, especially in the beverages section.”

While students don't always visit just for snacks, they tend to prefer one station or another based on which station has their favorite snacks, and instead go to Williams or off island for gas.

“My favorite snack when I go to moms would probably be chesters and a red bull,” said Moog.

After a hard workout or a sports practice, some students will get some of their favorite snacks as a pick me up.

“I really like the Bavarian Meats landjaegers, I usually get them when I go to the gym. I also enjoy the little 6 pack of dulce de leche donuts," said Caughell.

The majority of students said they would recommend Chevron to tourists, but only because of the fact it is better known and has more gas pumps. Some others would rather recommend Mom's because it is a local business.

“I would recommend Moms because it is local and more cheap,” said Miza Miles-Paulson.

Overall most students would rather make a trip to Moms than to Chevron for many reasons: the environment makes people feel at ease, friendships with workers, and the thought of fun check-out conversations keep people coming back. The prices of goods and the proximity to the school, makes it much more convenient for after school sport snacks.
