School's Out, Fun Is In: The Best Summer Plans

Summer vacation is my favorite time of the year. No alarm clocks, no studying for tests, finally, a chance to relax. After months of school stress, summer is a much needed break. But once the initial thrill of freedom wears off, I always end up asking myself: how do I actually want to spend all this free time? And while lying around and binge watching shows is tempting, I’ve found there are so many better ways to enjoy the summer.
For me, travel is at the top of the list. There’s something refreshing about leaving my usual routine behind, even if it’s just for a day. I love the idea of a road trip with family or camping with friends. You don’t have to go far to feel like you’re on vacation. A quick beach day, a hike, or just touring around your own city can be just as exciting as a faraway destination. Exploring new places and trying different foods or activities always gives me new memories and a break from my usual day to day life.
When I’m not traveling, I think getting a summer job or internship is a smart move. Working, even if it’s something simple like babysitting or helping out at a café, not only gives me extra spending money, but also helps me stay productive. Plus, it looks good on college applications and teaches me valuable lessons about time management and responsibility. Even short term jobs or volunteer work can open doors to opportunities I never expected.
Another thing I’ve learned to appreciate is using summer to learn something new. Whether it’s an art workshop, an online class, or a dual enrollment course, learning during the summer can actually be fun when you're interested in the subject. For me, picking up a new skill is a great way to challenge myself while still enjoying the break. It keeps my brain active and often leads to discovering new passions.
Of course, my favorite activity is just hanging out with friends and family. Some of my favorite summer memories are the simplest ones, movie nights, late-night drives, or just spending time together doing nothing. After a long school year, I always look forward to having unlimited time with my friends. With so much free time, summer allows for unexpected plans and last minute fun that usually turns into the best stories.
Finally, I always try to save a little time just for myself. Whether that means listening to music, going on walks, or lying on the beach, summer is the perfect time to reflect, recharge, and prepare for the school year ahead.
So, while I do sleep in and binge watch a few shows, I also make it a point to try something new, stay active, and make the most of a season that offers so much freedom. It’s the perfect balance of fun, growth, and relaxation.
