Second semester started about a month ago at Vashon Island High School, and seniors are thinking about what they are planning to do after high school in preparation for graduation.
Many have ideas of going to college or trade school. Others are thinking about getting straight into the workforce to earn an income.
“I'm planning on going to college to further my education and I think college is a nice switch up,” Senior Finn Lawler stated.
There are mixed feelings about the college experience. Some students already planned what jobs they want to pursue after high school or college. While others don’t know what they want to major in.
“I'm not entirely sure what I want to major in, but I know I want it to do with math. I haven't figured out what jobs I want to do yet, because I've been thinking more about the major I want to do,” Senior Xan London-Chambers responded.
The way students think about the future can vary drastically in preparation for their lives. Many seniors have not fully decided on what they are going to major in.
“I'm not 100 percent sure what I want to study yet, but I'm going to start with majoring in business and see if I enjoy it, and if I don’t I will hopefully switch it up,” Senior Besa Hruska stated.
Job ideas can vary due to there being so many jobs in the world and personal interests. Students at VHS have opinions on why they are choosing their future jobs, whether it's for the pay or for their own passion.
“I'm interested in being a substance abuse counselor, mental health counselor or a published author on books that are on psychology because I already run a support group at school for trans people,” Senior Astro Mullins said.
Seniors are not just thinking about future careers, but also about ways to celebrate graduation. Many have ideas of celebrating with friends or family.“I'm planning on going on a senior trip with all my friends to like Mexico because it’s pretty and close,” Senior Sailor Frith said.
Hanging out with friends and family are great ways to spend time celebrating the prize worthy accomplishment of graduating high school. Celebrating with them can vary depending on what you enjoy.
“I'm planning on spending time with my family and probably getting dinner. As well as hanging out with my friends,” Mullins said.
Many great memories are formed in the four years during high school.
“Honestly my best memory at VHS is probably going to football games,” Frith added.
In the end, memories and experiences of high school will always be remembered through your adulthood. But in the next many years of your life you will create new fun memories and stories.
Students’ chose their career path on whether they want to go to college, trade school, or even just start in the workforce. All careers matter, as long as you care for and are passionate about the job you are about to pursue. There are many changes from high school that graduated seniors are going to face. In the end, graduation is something to celebrate for starting on the path towards adulthood.
